In the booming development of new displays and the third-generation semiconductor industry, San’an Optoelectronics has received much attention in the industry regarding its Mini/Micro LED and third-generation semiconductor projects at Gedian and Changsha in Hubei Province and Hunan Province, respectively. Recently, the company has made progress on these two projects.
San’an Hubei Project Is Officially Put into Operation
San’an has spent RMB12 billion (US$1.85 billion) in total on its Hubei project, planning to build a research, development, and manufacturing base for its three flagship product series, namely Mini/Micro LED GaN chips, Mini/Micro LED GaAs chips, and 4K display package.
On February 3, 2021, the topping out of the phase-1 main building was accomplished; on March 16, the substation of the project delivered electricity to the building as scheduled; on April 16, trial production kicked off. In the near future, the Hubei project will officially be put into operation.
As reported by the Hubei Daily, Zhu Xiao-Rong, Director of the Bureau of Investment Promotion of Gedian Development Zone in Ezhou, said that San’an will provide key components for optoelectronics companies including Tianma and TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology.
Additionally, as a critical supplier of Samsung, San’an Optoelectronics will continue supplying Mini/Micro LE chips to the conglomerate in Seoul.

First Phase of San’an’s Hunan Project Will Begin Tomorrow
With a total investment amount of RMB16 billion, San’an’s two-phase project in Hunan aims to serve as a production, research, and development base for the entire supply chain of the third-generation semiconductor industry. Specifically, the base will focus on manufacturing wide-bandgap materials (i.e., SiC and GaN).
On January 19 this year, the biggest single M2B chip plant under the Hunan project was topped out. Presently, all the phase-1 plants have been built. The latest update indicates that the first phase of this project will kick off tomorrow, where the machinery will be put into operation.
Notably, the Hunan semiconductor project of San’an has so far been funded by the Chinese government with an amount over RMB700 million (US$108 million).
Following the initiation of the said projects and increased production capacity, San’an will make further progress in the Mini/Micro LED and third-generation semiconductor sectors. (Summarized by LEDinside)
