Korean media etnews covered that Samsung is planning to make an investment in Micro LED facilities in the first half of 2020 to kick off mass production of Micro LED.
According to the report, Samsung has been in contact with equipment manufacturers and pending on the scale of the investment. The Korean giant might make its final decision for the Micro LED investment after CES 2020.
Samsung was said to reveal the specifications of the Micro LED product at CES 2020 and decide further on the production volume afterwards.
The company has showcase its Micro LED TVs at CES in the past two years. In 2018, Samsung first unveiled “The Wall,” a 146-inch modular TV during the event and called it Micro LED display. This year in 2019, a new 75-inch display, which considered as the “real” Micro LED display, was presented.

Taiwan’s PlayNitride has supplied its Micro LED chips to Samsung for the 75-inch The Wall display. Samsung may continue the partnership with PlayNitride if it begins Micro LED display mass production. Recently, PlayNitride also ordered a new facility from German equipment producer AIXTRON to increase Micro LED chip production.
Despite that the industry still has doubts on the maturity of Micro LED technology for volume production, Samsung’s partners are looking forwards to the new markets created by the next-gen display technology with innovative applications.
