Samsung and Sony’s Micro LED Displays Win SID’s Display of the Year Awards


The Society of Information Display (SID) announced the winners of its Display Industry Awards. Winners of Display of the year include Samsung’s “The Wall,” Sony’s Crystal LED Display and Apple’s OLED display for Apple Watch Series 4. Two out of the three winners went to Micro LED displays.

Samsung revealed “The Wall,” a 146-inch display at CES 2018 for the first time. In 2019, the Korean company released a 75-inch Micro LED display with the “real” Micro LED chips which is only 1/15 of the chips used in 2018. SID noted that The Wall incorporates Samsung’s Micro LED-based technology, Quantum Processor Modular and AI-Upscaling to achieve pristine picture quality up to 8K resolution, as well as pure colors, stunning high-dynamic range (HDR) 10+, and a peak luminance of up to 2,000 nits.

Another award was granted to Sony’s Crystal LED display which consists of a display controller and modular display units made from Micro LEDs. Sony recently announced that it is installing a 16K Micro LED display adopting Crystal LED technology in Japan. In addition to high contrast, this display supports high-dynamic range (HDR), with 10-bit color depth and enormous color gamut. Sony has also developed active-matrix pixel-drive circuitry with micro ICs, which achieves an ultra-fast video response time with a 120-Hz refresh rate.

Apple’s LTPO OLED Display for Apple Watch Series 4 was also awarded with the price and was the only OLED display named in the list.

Display Week 2019 will take place May 12 to 17 in San Jose, California, U.S.A. Focusing on emerging electronic display and visual information technologies, the event serve as a leading platform for display innovation demonstration from worldwide manufacturers.
