However, over the years, they have been developed and today they are a great lighting option, so are being used more and more. Even LED street lighting is being adopted by town and city councils throughout the world.
Cost Effective
Without a doubt, the main driver behind this has been cost. LED street lighting is far cheaper to run than traditional luminance lights. LED bulbs require far less power to produce the same levels of lights as any kind of luminance bulb. Savings vary depending on the exact type of bulb being replaces. However, typically LEDs use between 40 and 60% less power than the luminance bulbs they are replacing. For a town or city, the cost savings are huge.
Within three years, the cost of replacing existing lights with LED lights is usually re-cooped entirely. This includes the cost of the labour used to switch the lighting system over to LEDs.
Low Maintenance
There are other ongoing cost savings. LED bulbs last up to ten times longer than other types of bulbs. This means that they need changing far less often representing a significant saving in terms of labor. It also makes it practical for councils to hand the responsibility of maintenance over to contractors rather than running their own teams. Potentially councils can save more money because they do not have to lease expensive equipment such as scissor lifts that are needed for street light maintenance.
Environmentally Friendly
The fact that LEDs consume less electric means that they are very environmentally friendly. Less power consumption means less power has to be produced to run them, which in turn translates into far lower carbon emissions. LED bulbs do not contain harmful chemicals like mercury, so their production and disposal has less of a negative effect on the environment. The fact that they last longer also has a very positive effect on the environment.
Bright and Efficient
LEDs are bright as well as being efficient. They are also directional, so a lower watt bulb can sometimes be used simply because the light can be directed to where it is needed most. LEDs are also available in a wide range of colors.
Easy to Replace
Because there is no need for re-wiring switching over to LED bulbs is often a simple case of replacing existing bulbs with LED bulbs. An adapter may need to be fitted as well, but even this does not take long.
LED Street Lighting is Adaptable
LED street lighting can be used in many different environments. The fact that there is already a good choice of fixtures means that they can easily replace lighting in places like car parks. Commercial street lighting can also potentially be used by homeowners to light a patio or the area in front of their home. Residents on private roads normally have to provide their own lighting. Unsurprisingly LED street lighting is proving popular with you.
