LED Outdoor Lighting – What Is It And Why Use It?

Many people use LED outdoor lighting for a variety of different reasons. It can be used for security purposes or just to make your yard look better at night. Using them to create accent points in the garden is another great way to enhance the look of your place.

What exactly are LED lights?

The term LED stands for light emitting diode. Basically it's a device that transforms electrons into light. The first LED's were made in the 1960's and only 3 colors were available at the time: green, blue and red. Until recently they were very hard to come by, but can now be found in many different lighting units. It was not until 1993 that you could get an LED in a white light. These devices work in what is referred to as electroluminescence. This works because the material used emits light whenever a charged electron passes through it.

Part of the reason LED outdoor lighting is becoming so popular is because of the low voltage needed to operate them. Other industries which include the automotive and aviation industry have also benefited from them. This has a lot to do with how efficient and long lasting these lights are. The truth is and it may be hard to believe, but many of the first LEDs are still working today. This efficient lighting is available in solar powered units.

What benefits are there in using them in your garden?

The benefits of LED outdoor lighting is numerous, but let me just name a few. They are more energy efficient than normal lights, they work great in a solar system and they last a very long time.

As a light source I'd say it is probably the most advanced technology we have at our disposal. These little light bulbs are a technological marvel and you have a wide range of styles and colors to choose from. Considering that we are now in a time when eco friendly is the way to go these types of lights fit right in. Power consumption is significantly lower with LED lights; they use around half the power to give the same amount of light.

As an added bonus LEDs are easy to take care making them the perfect choice for outdoor use. When used in a solar lighting unit you can place them anywhere you like as long as it gets the right amount of sunlight each day to recharge. Using LED outdoor lighting in your garden not only adds light, but it also accentuates areas of interest and makes the whole garden look better I do not think there are a lot of down sides to using them except when you go to buy them will end up costing you more upfront, but they will so long in the end you'll save money.

My very first job in 1990 was with the Street Lighting Division for my local power company as an Electrical Engineering Student Co-Op..... I guess you can say, in the almost 30 years of business experience, I have seen a lot of changes. However, I believe the changes we are currently witnessing now and the pace of technology advancements in the lighting industry, will be the most exciting time period yet.
