Autonomous Vehicle Company Aurora Releases LiDAR Sensor for Its Self-driving Cars

Self-driving technology startup Aurora announced its self-developed LiDAR sensor FirstLight LiDAR last week. The LiDAR sensor was tested on Aurora’s test vehicles to help the perception system to see and track objects farther, faster, and with greater precision.

Aurora acquired LiDAR company Blackmore last year eyeing the expertise of FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) technology. FMCW LiDAR delivers a constant stream of light and changes the frequency of that light at regular intervals. With the technology, Aurora said it could determine the location of objects and precisely measure their velocity at the same time using the Doppler Effect.

Comparing to AM LiDAR system, FMCW LiDAR sensor enables driver to see beyond 300 meters even on targets that reflect less light, such as dark objects. In addition, Aurora’s FMCW LiDAR operates around the 1550nm wavelength band, allowing the sensors to broadcast stronger light pulses while still meeting eye safety standards.

Aurora’s FirstLight LiDAR are now testing on the company’s autonomous vehicle fleet.
