According to Korean media, Samsung has modified its plan about the adoption of UV LEDs in new household appliances in 2021, and the number of new household appliances using UV LED technology in 2021 has been lowered.
In response to the pandemic, in September 2020 Samsung announced the adoption of UV LEDs in 20-30% of its new household appliances in 2021. Yet, insiders revealed that the number of applications of the original plan has been lowered by Samsung. Afterwards, with feedback in the market, the application range will have a chance to be increased.
Recently, the installation of UV LEDs in new household appliances has been tested. However, UV LEDs will only be adopted in one model of each product series.
Home appliance products, including a refrigerator, an air purifier, an air conditioner, a washing machine and a fabric cleaner, are being checked. The 250-280nm UVC LEDs are adopted, and the major test is the disinfection and deodorization effect.

So far, Samsung’s Bespoke refrigerator and AirDresser have installed UV LED products.
According to industry insiders, compared with the original plan, Samsung took a conservative attitude toward the UVC LED application, mainly because evaluating the feedback in the market and disinfection effects is challenging.
Besides, the supplier offering the test modules for Samsung this time is using Seoul Viosys’ UV LED chips. UV lamps will also be chosen by Samsung if the effects of UVC LEDs are lower than expected.
