The Japanese LED giant Nichia, according industry sources, will supply Apple with its 0.3t LED chips for use in the backlight of the new iPhone’s LTPS-LCD panels.
The 0.3t chips enable the LTPS-LCD smartphone screens with backlights to have bezels of 2.0-2.5mm, which is smaller compared to the 4.0-4.4mm bezels for the LTPS-LCD backlight panels using 0.4t LED chips. The LCD screens with shorter bezels make it more competitive against the bezel-free OLED all screens panels.
In comparison with the packaging of 0.4t LED chips, it is more difficult to control the accuracy and stability of 0.3t LED chips packaging. Nichia has been processing trial production of 0.3t LED chips to provide smartphone models for Chinese and Japanese companies in the first half of 2018.
Following the information provided by industry sources, Nichia’s production capacity for 0.3t LED chips in 2H18 will be fully booked by Apple as the new 6.1 inch iPhone is expected to enter trial production in July and small production in August, followed by mass production in September.
