Micro LEDforum 2018 – eLux Shares its Fluidic Assembly Technology for Micro LED Display

The U.S. based start-up, eLux with its patent technology of Micro LED transfer process and its business cooperation with the Foxconn Group, has been attracting attentions from the industry. LEDinside invited Paul Schuele, the founder and CTO of eLux, to speak at Micro LEDforum 2018 to share the company’s technological progress and insights of the industry.

eLux is well known for its fluidic assembly method for Micro LED display. This approach has covered more than 20 patents including mass transfer of Micro LED arrays, Micro LED driver scheme, color conversion structure, fabrication of micro displays, and others. Fluidic assembly involves using fluid suspending liquid as a medium to pump and drag LEDs, which are then captured by the substrate at precise positions. The method can assemble Micro LED efficiently and recycle the extra LEDs.

According to Schuele, improving the quality of LED chips and increasing yield would be challenges for the fluidic assembly method. Currently eLux is preparing a RGB demo and a display prototype before moving into the next step. It will take at least three years to produce large size displays, said Schuele. eLux also sees the potential for the automotive market. However, as automotive products demand high reliability and long lifetime, it might take five years before eLux can enter the market.

eLux was acquired by Foxconn and became a member of the Foxconn Technology Group as well as a key player of the company’s Micro LED development. eLux will be the technology support for the Foxconn group and will cooperate with its affiliated firms in various aspects. Schuele noted that eLux will work with AOT for backlight and collaborate with Innolux for backplane.

To collect and share more insights of Micro LED technologies, LEDinside is currently hosting the 2018 Micro LED Technology Research Contest and would like to invite companies, academic institutions and other corporate entities to submit abstracts or outlines of their latest technical papers related to innovative Micro LED technologies.
