On its investor interaction platform, BOE announced that the company, as VR/AR applications start to thrive, has entered mass production of 8/12-inch Micro OLEDs at its plant in Kunming of Yunnan Province. Currently, the production capacity of such OLED products is able to meet the overall market demand.
Reportedly, BOE signed a partnership agreement with Yunnan OLiGHTEK Opto-Electronic Technology, Dianzhong Industrial Development Group and Kopin (Shenzhen) in 2017. The partnership totaled an investment of 1.15 billion yuan ($178 million) in a project of Micro OLED production line establishment in Kunming, under which the four companies founded the joint venture BMOT.
According to its description, BMOT—originally known as “Kunming BOE Display Technology”—was founded in November 2017 with a registered capital of 3.04 billion yuan ($470 million) and BOE having 82.8% of ownership. In July 2020, the company was renamed to the current BMOT, which specializes in production, sales and R&D of Micro OLED components.
In March this year, BOE revealed on its investor interaction platform that BMOT has mass produced 8-inch silicon-based Micro OLEDs in August 2019 and is now expanding its production capacity. The new production line of 12-inch Micro LEDs will be constructed in three phases and is expected to be accomplished in January 2024, with an output of 5.23 million pcs per year.
